FYI
SUMMER HAIR
Summer months are generally very hot. People spend a great deal of time outdoors and in water activities. Exposure to the sun's harmful UV rays can lead to dry, brittle hair that changes its color, and summer water activities can create unpredictable results when working with chemicals. This is generally the growth time for hair. More active lifestyles, better eating habits and happy spirits all contribute to this. However, there are some side effects we must deal with.
Effects:
* Oxidation - The sun naturally oxidzes the hair and lightens the natural color. The more you expose the hair to UV rays, the lighter the hair becomes.
* Sweating/Dryness - Excessive sweating may occur during this time of year as activities increase. Sweating leaves salt deposits, which cause a drying effect on the hair and the scalp. It must be removed with frequent shampoos.
* Chlorine Damage - Water activities increase during the summer months. As a result we are exposed to chlorine, which has a negative effect on natural hair and even more so on chemically treated hair. It is imperative to remove chlorine immediately from the hair after exposure. Breakage and dry dull hair can result if hair does not receive the proper maintenance.
Prevention is also an internal thing. There's a greater need to replenish the water intake for the body for additional internal moisture. So increase your normal intake to at least two liters per day. Diet is also important. Remember that an inadequate diet results in poor growth of nails, skin and hair. Eat a sufficient amount of proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables to hydrate the skin, nails and hair. Include a good source of vitamins containing protein and Vitamin E to your daily routine. Beware of some multiple vitamins that may contain too much Vitamin A or sometimes referred to as Beta-Carotene. These in excess can cause hair loss. Remember you are what you eat!
BREAKAGE
You should know: Abusing hair with multiple processes, such as improperly or too frequently relaxing and coloring, coupled with excessive heat from thermal styling is the most common cause of breakage. Hair that's prone to breakage needs to be strengthened with essential proteins and relieved of stress.
CAUSES:
Hair breakage is often the result of our own improper hair care practices, including:
*Frequent and/or multiple Chemical processes like relaxing, permanent coloring and permanent waving
*Constant pulling of hair caused by hair extensions and too-tight ponytails and braids
*Rough combing and brushing when need a relaxer
*Overuse of thermal styling tools
*Improper lack of water, vitamins, improper diet and not exercising
*Not Detoxing and cleansing the body of toxins and waste
SOLUTIONS:
To reduce breakage it's important to follow hair care maintenance practices. You can improve your hair's strength and prevent breakage by following these recommendations:
*Use covered elastic hair ties and rubber-tipped bobby pins
*Wrap hair in a satin scarf or sleep on a satin pillowcase
*Don't repeat chemical applications before the recommended time
*Properly neutralize and rinse all chemical residue from hair after processing
*Opt for semi-permanent or demi-permanent hair coloring processes
*Use a leave-in conditioner to balance moisture
